The mother-daughter duo discussed in the cover story forBritish Vogue’s Great Britain: Tradition & Revolution issuehow the model’s career impacted motherhood and her daughter’s perception of her.
Throughout the interview, Kate explained how she juggled modeling and becoming a mother to her daughter — whom she shares with Jefferson Hack — in 2002. “I kept working after I had Lila, of course, but I shifted most of my jobs to the UK and kept her away from the craziness of sets and backstage and everything,” shared the 49-year-old.
“It didn’t take long to realize she wanted mummy to be mummy, not a model in a wig.”

Lila explained that her mother followed through and separated the two so much that she didn’t realize how famous her mother was.
The young model shared that she began to reckon with her mother’s fame and career once she began school.
“She always kept her work life separate from our home life," said Lila. “Though I do have one memory of her taking me with her to a Topshop meeting, and everything grinding to a halt while she tried to teach me how to blow a bubble with bubblegum for the first time.”
The 22-year-old confessed she’s seen her mother as “the person who wouldn’t let [her] use [her] phone at the dinner table and made [her] come home from parties in Notting Hill earlier than any of [her] friends.”
She explained that after she expressed an interest in art and design, her father set in motion the realization that her mother might be cool.

“I don’t know that my mum expected me to go into fashion, really – I’m quite shy, like her.” Lila added, “She hasn’t helped me with my walk, though. She’s like, ‘You just have to feel it. I don’t know what I do. I just do it!’ I’m like, ‘Cool – off to practice some more, then…’”
