Keke Palmer, who was recently granted a temporary restraining order against ex-boyfriendDarius Jackson, gave him “a lot of chances” in the past, a source tells PEOPLE exclusively.
Earlier this week, the actress, 30, was also awarded temporary sole physical and legal custody of 8-month-old Leodis, the son she shares with Jackson, 29, after filing a request for adomestic violencerestraining order against Jackson and requesting custody of their child.
Now, a source tells PEOPLE that Palmer “did what she had to do,” despite having worked “hard to have an amicable split.”
“She gave him a lot of chances to do the right thing,” they add. “Keke tried so hard to have an amicable split and arrangement [custody].”
Palmer alleged in Thursday’s California Superior Court filing, which had a declaration attached, that on Nov. 5, “Darius trespassed into my home without my knowledge or consent, threatened me, then physically attacked me — lunging for my neck, striking me, throwing me over the couch, and stealing my phone when I told him I was going to call the police.”
The filing included screenshots of what appeared to be security footage of a male striking a female over a sofa. Palmer also alleged that Jackson abused her multiple times over a two-year period. The filing alleged that there were “many instances of physical violence, including striking and grabbing me around the neck, descriptions of Darius destroying my personal property, including diaries and prescription eyeglasses, throwing my belongings into the street, throwing my car keys to prevent me from driving away, hitting me in front of our son, spewing profanities about me to our son, threatening to kill himself with a gun if I left him, harassment, and other physical and emotional abuse."
