Julia Robertsmade headlines Friday when she walked the red carpet at the 2016 Cannes film festivalbarefoot.
But if you’re a fan of Roberts, you’ll know it’s not the first time the 48-year-old actress has rocked the barefoot look. Here are some of the most memorable times Roberts has chucked her footwear:
On her auditions
Lest you think that Julia Roberts’ barefoot look is a style the superstar celebrity has adopted after finding fame, look to Joel Schumacher to set you straight.
The director cast a virtually unknown Roberts in one of her first roles, 1990’sFlatliners, andrecountedRoberts’ comfortable audition style to theChicago Sun-Timesin 1999.
“I met Julia after I had gotten off a plane from London. And I was so jet-lagged that I practically couldn’t stand up.” Schumacher said. I remember it was this blaring hot day and this unknown girl named Julia Roberts arrived in cutoff jeans, barefoot, this old baggy T-shirt, no makeup. Her hair was piled on top of her head. She was 20 and just so incredible. I forgot about my jet lag and fell in love with her. I thought, ‘How have I lived without this person in my life?’ ”
On her wedding day
InPEOPLE’s cover story of the wedding, her friends said they immediately recognized her bare feet as the most Julia-esque fashion fillip. “She looked gorgeous,” one of her bridesmaids said, of the 25-year-old bride.
On film
On the big screen, Roberts has been barefoot in a number of her iconic films, including 1999’sNotting Hill,1989’sSteel Magnolias,2011’sThe Mexicanand 1991’sSleeping with the Enemy.
She spent all of 1991’sHookbarefoot, flying around as the feisty Tinkerbell in thePeter Pansequel. And she got into the fairy-tale spirit again in 2012’sMirror, Mirror, lounging barefoot in a few scenes as the evil Queen.
Of course, there was her Oscar-winning role in 2000’sErin Brockovich, where Roberts’ title character kicked off her shoes to retrieve water samples; a shoeless scene withTom Hanksin 2011’sLarry Crowne; and some barefoot praying in 2010’sEat, Pray, Love.
Plus, who could forgetPretty Women, which included a bathtub scene that showed Roberts and costarRichard Geregetting cozy as she runs her toes under the tub’s running faucet. Or the film’s polo-match scene, in which she strolled though the playing filed sans shoes.
On talk shows
Roberts got comfortable on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2014, rocking bare feet while dishing aboutDeGeneres‘star-studded Oscars selfie.
Ironically, the actress spent some time talking about shoes, gifting DeGeneres with a pair of them fromthe Office of Angela Scott.
At awards shows
In 2013, Roberts ditched her heels while appearing at the BAFTA Britannia Awards in L.A., as she presented palGeorge Clooneywith the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film.
Wearing black toenail polish to match her black mini dress, Roberts was wheeled out onstage in a wheelchair – a callback to the duo’s longstanding friendship.
On magazine covers
Julia Roberts has graced the cover of many a magazine throughout her years – often without her shoes on.
There was a shot on a 1994 issue ofRolling Stone. And most recently, the star graced the cover of FrenchEllebarefoot, promoting her new movieMoney Monster.
It’s the second time Roberts has shown her bare feet on the cover of FrenchElle. The actress did so on a 2014 cover.
