Terry Goodkind — best know for The Sword of Truth serial — has publicly apologise after posting vituperative criticism of thecover art for his previous book , Shroud of Eternity . The author eventually lay the blame on his publishing firm , Tor Books , but the artist who created the screen suppose it ’s not skillful enough .
Goodkind recently wrote a mail on Facebook squall his latest phantasy novel , “ a not bad Holy Scripture with a very bad cover . ridiculously unsound . ” In the post , Goodkind bid his reviewer to share their thoughts about the coverin a poll(which currently has almost 14,000 responses ) , saying he ’d pick 10 random commenters to receive a sign up copy .

Part of the Sister of Darkness : The Nicci Chronicles series , the cover artwork Goodkind knock shares a similar look to the series debut , Death ’s fancy woman — no surprise , as they both share the same artist , Bastien Lecouffe Deharme . He ’s a notable creative person known for his study on Magic : The assemblage , but he ’s also created ledger blanket for several publication houses , including Tor Books , Random House , Del Rey , and Orbit Books . Deharme said he was shocked when he discover out what Goodkind had said about his latest employment .
“ [ A friend ] sent me a message that I found in the morning when I wake up , telling me that Terry Goodkind was using bad words to describe my artwork , ” Deharme told io9 . “ I am a very confident person . I have had a long career , long enough for me to be able to take that … but this behavior is just not acceptable . Not only for me , but for all the artists that could be in the same spot . ”
“ I can take that , it ’s no trouble , ” he added . “ [ But ] if this happen to me five long time ago , I think this would have destroy me . ”
After Goodkind posted his critique of Shroud of Eternity ’s artwork , Deharmeresponded to the post , sharing his frustration at the author ’s behavior and garnering the support of notable source and artists like Chuck Wendig and Leesha Hannigan . Goodkind has sinceapologizedon Facebook — though he purposefully keep up the original spot and public opinion poll “ for the interest of the competition . ” In his Emily Price Post , he said he was n’t upset at Deharme , but rather the publisher , Tor Books , who reportedly did n’t send him the artwork until right before it went to print :
I was sent the covert art shortly before publication . We all expressed our dissatisfaction with the character agency of the nontextual matter and we protested the printing . We were overrule and the book went to print as - is . Sometimes that bump . It stings to see a publishing house not always seem to like as much as we do … The intention of our contest was to instead encourage my publishing house to devote more thoughtful consideration with the graphics they enwrap around my book .
This does point to an exist issue between authors and newspaper publisher . There are times when cover art run out to meet the expectations of the author or the work itself and warrants fudge factor . Goodkind ’s Facebook post included an excuse to Deharme , but Deharme said the author has yet to reach out and discuss the matter in someone . Even still , Deharme said he does n’t forgive Goodkind and does n’t design on work for him again . He added that he was correct to create the cover artistic production for the third book in Sister of Darkness : The Nicci Chronicles , but will no longer be doing so .
