What is Darkscorch ? Is it an album of 70 metal songs about pagan ritual , adept , and Sauron ? A board game about being a band battling for a record mickle ? elaborated maps sketched on graph paper in tenth grade study hall ? Yes . Darkscorch is all of these things .
Darkscorch offers what its creators call “ little - known seventy hard rock ” compile around a Dungeons & Dragons theme , with mysterious pinch of a board game still in growing . “ Each player is a band touring a fictional world struggle other bands and attempt to down a record contract . ”
It ’s like someone peered into my mind and made all my dreams do true . It could only be more perfect if they stuck a few picture of warrior maiden in improbable armour in there ( hey , I like what I like ) . Let ’s start with the compilation record album . It ’s called Warfaring Strangers : Nightscorch Canticles , andThe Numero Groupis the disc recording label responsible . Being a boastful fan of “ little - known ” 70 voiceless rock , I was excited and rum to see which of my favorites had made the cut .

But little - bonk is not really the correct terminus . These are American bands who only ever commemorate a few songs , mostly on their own dime . It ’s unlikely many people outside their home towns ever get a line of them . I certainly had n’t . My red ink , because there is some killer whale rock and roll here . confessedly , most of these songs are rough around the edge . I doubt anyone here was a professional musician . There ’s a hatful of sensitive intensity , and each set seems to have ambitions that occasionally exceed their musical attainment . The vocalizer are n’t perfect , the drummers steal in and out of time . All part of the charm .
That said , there are some standout tracks . A banding called Air gets credit for creating a sort of proto - prog - metal , and also for coming up with the term “ Satanial , ” which seems to be a sort of schedule diabolic garden party . I loved “ Black Death ” by Arrogance , and the belligerent “ Slave of Fear ” by Stone Axe , which features one of the most outrageousmeedley meedley guitar momentsyou’ll ever hear . The net rail , “ Cry for the Newborn ” by Hellstorm , actually suggest at some serious potentiality . It ’s a form of visionary Hendrixian dose funk with weird industrial rhythm sounds . You canlisten to the entire albumon Soundcloud .
In between those peaks you ’ll find peck of warfare - tear flat coat treaded by a Wizzard King , a Black Wizard , a Sorcerer , a Warlord , and the King of the Golden Hall ( all actual call deed of conveyance ) . How to describe this music , take as a whole ? The press release does a good line :

“ This music hail from an occlude realm , somewhere just beyond the pot - woolly minds of its Almighty . Lyrically , the Darkscorch Canticles trifle with themes most grave : incapacitating reverence , pagan hostility , paranoia , power dependency — even necromancy . Satan ’s name is openly stir , alongside Sauron ’s . In this collection , mediaeval Bonham thunk and febrile Iommi guitar lead herd out the bluesy Americana that foregrounded those band , replace hippie pastoralism with mythology , armoured battle , black art , and doom . Within , the encroachment of Black Sabbath on US shores and heartlands is unveil as a bludgeoning previously undescribed . ”
But it turns out this deliriously stoned relic of a comp record album is just the outset . There ’s also a board secret plan . It ’s obviously not complete , but it ’s due out in May . They sent me image of the plot display panel and box , along with some of the cards . The cards have inexplicable symbolization on them ( which in reality appear to stand for the four musical instrument in a typical rock’n’roll set ) along with eccentric declarations : “ Went to Woodstock collectively , mostly to perforate multitude , individually , ” reads one . “ coalesce punk liquor with adult - oncoming acne since 1974 , ” state another .
I needed to have a go at it more . I needed to understand this plot . I lit candles and placed them in the anatomy of an inverse pentagram ( this is advanced clobber , if you do n’t know what that is , I ’m not go to explicate it ) . I softly intone the Invocation of the Blackened Skull . I burned a pocket-size wax simulacrum of Nyo’gklargal’ax , the Demon Horse With Runecarved Hooves . And lo there did come out before me an email of dark and sluttish portent .

That email included information from wind decorator Dustin Drase , who was aid in designing the game by Ken Shipley and Judson Picco . They to begin with wanted to make a use - meet game like D&D , but about rock bands questing for a disc mint . To simplify things , they function with a board game inspired by Trivial Pursuit , Munchkin , and Mille Bornes :
“ Early translation of Darkscorch were strongly link to Mille Bornes in full term of band movement and what we call “ GOD visiting card ” that are essentially the same as the takeover - fourré from that game . you may still see the remnants of Mille Bornes in our “ Shitty Van ” cards and the way that you may buy promoters or get a book agent through the use of fate card . Our battle mechanic is pulled from a combining of Munchkin and THAC0 ( To Hit Armor Class Zero ) from Dungeons & Dragons . We spent a lot of fourth dimension on the art and flavor text on the cards to raise the enjoyment of the game . This was for the most part animate by the flavour text on Magic Cards , but incorporates more of the pert humor of Munchkin . ”
Along with these eldritch muttering , I also receive a moldering papers scrawled on dry out goatskin that purported to be the game ’s pedagogy manual of arms . I was forbidden to reproduce it , and can only learn its accursed word on sealed night when the constellations come out all wrong and the starlight that falls upon the dread page seems to come from another realm all . But I could interpret enough to get the basic thought .

What you do is form a band with menu for each dance band member . At each city , you ’ll pick one band member to wage war , then draw from a enemy pack of cards and fight that band , playing superfluous cards to increase your band ’s luck of succeeder . The roll of a 20 - sided die determines the result . profits and you get to claim a banner from that city . The other players are doing the same affair , and you may need to battle them instantly from clock time to time . At all costs , avoid the suburbs .
Once you ’ve claim streamer from all 16 metropolis , you’re able to travel to the Isle of Numenor for the terminal face-off ( seriously , it ’s the Isle of Numenor ) . If they win this final ultimate battle , they take a recording declaration with the Numero Group record label .
I do n’t want to put down Numero here , but to be honorable , if I ’d conquered 16 cities and the Isle of Numenor ( the gem of the 2d Age of Middle Earth , from whence Aragorn , Word of Arathorn was come ) , an indie recording declaration seems like something of a letdown . I ’m just say a nice maven ’s tower somewhere in Mirkwood does n’t seem too much to require .

On top of all this insanity , they also send a cluster of improbably luxuriant maps drawn on graph paper . I ’m not certain if these have anything to do with the board game – it looks like they ’re just included as part of the whole seventy fantasy vibration , and some of them depend like actual function someone used to wager D&D. I ’m seriously going to use them in my D&D hunting expedition .
So , what to make of this epic slab of ancient alloy and other days D&D prowess with a rock-and-roll band questing circuit card biz ? The medicine is prankish , peculiarly if you may never get enough bombastic guitar riffs . The biz , to be honest , looks as rough around the edges as the music sounds – a sort of reversion weekend bout with notebook scrawled identity card and rules that will make more sense once you ’re high . Every part of this masterfully work toward the same aesthetic , the map and the cards and the album cover and the amazing sweaty band photos , it ’s all like hang out with the cat in alloy shop in 1978 , then taking off in your Camaro to score some weed / Grand Funk tickets , then play throughIn the keep of the Slave Lordsall damn weekend .
