Mere hours have passed since theseventh episodeof HBO ’s Watchmen aired , and we ’re still a little shook . Wealready recognise the show was greatand wasbuilding to big things , but how many of us visualise that coming ? In the instalment , called “ An Almost Religious Awe , ” we notice out that Cal Abar ( Yahya Abdul - Mateen II ) is n’t actually Cal Abar at all . In fact , he ’s the fabled God amongst man of the Watchmen existence , Doctor Manhattan . A reveal like that give audience with so many questions and , gratefully , Watchmen executive producer Damon Lindelof verbalize toThe Hollywood Reporterabout a few of them . The biggest thing is : When did he decide that not only was Doctor Manhattan snuff it to be on the show , but be Angela ’s ( Regina King ) married man , Cal ?
“ I start out this whole journeying from the perspective of a rooter — what would I have to see in a television show presume to call itself Watchmen ? ” Lindelof told THR . “ Dr. Manhattan was near the top of that list . But even higher was that we needed to tell a novel story with a fresh character at the center of it . Once we landed on Angela Abar as that center , the raw regulation became that any bequest characters we were using ( Veidt , Laurie , and Hooded Justice ) could only be used in service of Angela ’s story … she was the sunshine , everyone else ask to be orbiting around her . So how could Dr. Manhattan , a valet with the power of God , be in service of Angela ’s story as fight down to the other manner around ? ground on his past times ( and all the tropes of Greco / Roman mythology ) , the response was visceral … beloved . Lindelof goes on to explain that in casting Abdul - Mateen II as Cal , only he and a few other primal the great unwashed recognise they were also in reality casting Doctor Manhattan . They tried to keep it as secretive as potential but it was “ a hundred per centum ” part of why they chose Abdul - Mateen . He also talks about the intend process behind the reveal of the Seventh Cavalry ’s architectural plan to basically recreate Doctor Manhattan .
It ’s a very in effect interview and you should say the respite of itover at THR . Obviously , though , it does n’t plunge into all the plot questions lift by the big reveal . The teaser for next week suggest at a few of thembut we still have so many . What ’s the extent of Angela ’s relationship with Doctor Manhattan ? How much has that played into her masked valour ?
