We know it ’s been bare months since we told you theworld ’s one-time forestis in New York State Department , but rub that : it ’s actually in southwest England . At 390 million years old , a lot of fossilized trees on the other side of the Atlantic has supplanted the US ’s phonograph record by several million years .

Prior to the in vogue uncovering , the old forest on Earth was believe to be 386 million years old and found in Cairo , New York state . But the fossilized trees nestled within the Hangman Sandstone Formation of Somerset and Devon are even older than that .

The shaping , which date to the Middle Devonian ( 393 million to 383 million years ago ) , was previously thought to contain only rareplant fossil , but new research has proven it to be far more abundant , include place upright plant dodo and cladoxylopsids – an extinct group of works bear on to ferns and sphenopsids ( horsetail ) .

Cladoxylopsids stand at around 2 to 4 meters ( 6.5 and 13 invertebrate foot ) high-pitched , meaning " it would n’t have been a very magniloquent woods , " written report lead author Neil Davies toldLive Science . But what the trees lack in size , they make up for in eld .

In their study , Davies and carbon monoxide gas - authors submit the earliest fossil grounds for such tree in Britain , as well as the oldest evidence of afossil forestanywhere in the world .

" We ’ve found rock where you ’ve got support Tree in growth situation adjacent to each other over a set area , " Davies say , " so we ’re looking at a snap where we can order for definite that there were Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree uprise in that specific locating and that the sediment we ’re looking at is the forest trading floor . "

As well as copious fossil evidence of the cladoxylopsid treeCalamophyton , the research worker found trace of other mediate Devonian plant and even sign of some ancient critter in the form of trackways .

What ’s more , the sediment that the crude plants were find in can shed some light on the impacts of the very early timberland .

“ The Hangman Sandstone Formation is demonstrative of the rotatory great power of cladoxylopsid trees as biogeomorphic agents , forming densely spaced forests and shedding exceptionally abundant plant junk , whilst also impacting local landforms and sediment accumulations and deeply changing landform resiliency against flood disturbance events , ” the study author write .

As such , they suggest that some 390 million years ago “ mark[ed ] the onset of tree diagram - driven change to forcible surroundings that would incessantly change Earth ’s non - nautical landscape and biosphere . ” In other words , timberland really started to take off .

This may be the oldest know dodo forest , but the oldest known living Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree is significantly vernal . At just5,400 years oldit ’s much a sapling compare to the cladoxylopsids of the Hangman Sandstone Formation . But both pallid in comparison withsharks , which , at 450 million years young , are so older they ’ve been around the galaxy doubly .

The study is published in theJournal of the Geological Society .
