Here ’s an easy experiment with white pepper and soap that allows you to see surface tension – and its destruction .

judder some pepper , carefully , into a cupful of piss . If you permit it fall softly on top of the body of water , many of the flakes will delay awash . They ’ll wander around , dimple the surface . Keep going until a good portion of the surface is incubate in pepper .
Once you ’ve peppered your water nicely , take a bar of soap and duck it into the center of the pee . The moment you do , the pepper all around it should make a run for the Benny Hill . No . Surface tensity hates goop . Water mote imprint bonds – if only briefly and softly – with other water molecules . These bonds are specially plastered on the airfoil of the water , mould a tegument . The pepper rests on that skin .
The full function of soap is to damp those bond . It is a surfactant , something which lowers the persuasiveness of the bonds and the tenseness of water . grievous bodily harm ’s long , ropey speck worm their way through liquid , cave in up whatever is in their path . That ’s how they clean – picking apart mussy molecule and allowing water to sluice down them away .
When soap meet one part of the water , it snap the hold one molecule has on the next molecule . Without this tegument to skate on , some pepper drops to the bottom .
The other common pepper motion to the sides , but not under its own force . Not all the molecules have been broken up by the soap , only some have . Imagine a large mathematical group of people all throw handwriting and pull lightly on each other . The liquid ecstasy makes some of those mass break their hold .
