Paukner , who does freelance prowess guide in Vienna , writes :

The preceding description of the domain does n’t divvy up the same scientific sentiment that we have , in which the Earth is one planet around one sunshine in a universe full of suns and planet . The ancient image of the universe limn a world in which the Earth is a disc surrounded by water not only on the English , but underneath and above as well . A firm stadium ( the empyrean ) keep the upper water back but has gate to let the rain and C. P. Snow through . The Sun , Moon , and stars move in prepare tracks along the underside of this bowl . From below the disc , the water break through as wells , rivers and the ocean , but the Earth stand firm on pillars slide down into the waters like the pillings of a pier . Deep below the Earth is Sheol , the domicile of the bushed , which can be entered only through the grave .
As portrayed in the example , the biblical cosmos consist of three basic regions : the sphere , the land , and the underworld . In finale , by understanding how biblical writers viewed the cosmos , readers are in a better position to in good order render the creative activity , the Flood , and other biblical stories , and to set them in their proper circumstance . The Bible is not a rule book of scientific discipline . It was written in a pre - scientific era and its main determination was to intercommunicate moral and spiritual lessons . The child of Israel had no advantage over their neighbors when it come to matters of scientific discipline . In fact , this erroneous concept of the macrocosm was quite common for that era . The Hebrews were inspired by nothing more than their political and spiritual motivation .
