Some of these letter come from local middle schooltime kids 10 - 12 years old and they ply a fascinating snapshot of the era ; unique in their power to think over the pessimism stir by a down thriftiness and shaken faith in government in a post - Watergate , post - Vietnam War earned run average , while also laying stripped the irrational optimism of youth .
Many of the predictions are clearly influenced by theenergy crisis , with many kids omen there will be tough times ahead without memory access to tawdry energy . However , there ’s also optimism about space geographic expedition and more than one reference to women as astronauts . Even thoughValentina Tereshkovabecame the first woman in space in 1963 , the first American woman ( Sally Ride , who died this past summer ) would n’t become an astronaut until 1983 — a full six years after these kids were make their predictions .
